CMMS vs MES: choose the maintenance and production handoff

Distinguish equipment work from production execution before deciding whether one or both systems are needed.

CMMS and MES can both appear in a factory software shortlist, but the buying decision begins with the work that needs coordination. Describe one equipment repair and one production order. Identify the people, information and approvals involved in each. Then examine where the two workflows must exchange information.

Establish the primary record

A maintenance evaluation follows equipment condition, planned service, repair work and asset history. A production-execution evaluation follows the released order, operations, resources and execution evidence. The same machine can be involved in both, while the records and responsible teams remain different.

Fiix’s manufacturing material describes maintenance records and planned work. TrakSYS describes manufacturing operations software. These official descriptions support investigating their respective scopes; this comparison is not a hands-on assessment or a claim that either product contains every function discussed here.

Decide which failure you are fixing

If technicians cannot find service history or record parts consumed during a repair, follow that maintenance case through the proposed system. If operators cannot identify the released operation or reconcile completion with planning, follow that execution case. If both problems occur, identify whether the business needs separate applications, additional modules or a broader configured platform.

Do not assume a dashboard closes either gap. A downtime chart can help people investigate equipment performance without managing a complete repair workflow. Similarly, a completed work order does not by itself establish that a production order has the correct revision, material history or quality disposition.

Demonstrate the shared event

Use a controlled example in which equipment becomes unavailable during production. Establish who records the event, how maintenance receives the request and who updates expected availability. Determine how the planner sees the interruption and who authorizes a return to service. Preserve the operational decision separately from the software status change.

For the connection, request the supported interface, fields, direction, timing and failure recovery. Confirm whether it is included, requires a connector or needs custom integration work. Two vendors displaying each other’s names is not enough to establish that the exact workflow works in the proposed editions.

Compare the implementation boundary

Ask who owns equipment identifiers, job identifiers, master data and integration support. Include technicians, operators and supervisors in a small pilot. Investigate conflicting updates, missing records and network interruptions. Evaluate adoption and record completeness before assuming a change in operational performance was caused by software.

Choose the scope that resolves the documented handoff with responsibilities the team can maintain. Keep costs for modules, interfaces, migration, training and administration visible. A combined platform can still require substantial configuration; separate applications can still work well when their boundaries are explicit. Neither architecture wins without the buyer’s actual requirements and demonstrated evidence.
